Ways to Help

The CDC has deemed drowning as major public health concern that has the potential to be prevented.

Why is this such a major concern?

Death by drowning is the #1 leading cause of death to children 1-4 years old.

It is the second leading cause for children 6-14 years old.

Everyday, in the US, 2 children under the age of 14 die because of drowning.

Drowning is often fatal and silent; it only takes seconds to lose a child to drowning.

Drowning can happen to anyone whenever and wherever water is involved.

Four Ways to Help Prevent Drownings

First

Learn basic swimming and water safety skills – formal swim lessons, especially for infants/toddlers, can help reduce the risk of drowning by teaching basic lifesaving skills like how to turnover and float.

Second

Supervise children in and around water closely – having a responsible adult to watch over children in and near water is always advised. Be certain to avoid distractions like reading, phones or the consumption of alcohol. It is also encouraged to proactively learn any possible risks when visiting unfamiliar locations.

Third

Learn and know the risks of natural waters – Ponds, creeks, rivers, lakes, and oceans have hidden and unexpected hazards. Be sure to check the weather before participating in any activities in, on, or near water. Man-made ponds, creeks, and lakes are appearing more and more in residential locations. Be certain to learn the locations of the ones in your local neighborhood and supervise your children accordingly when near them.

Fourth

Learn infant/child CPR – knowing CPR could be the catalyst that saves a child’s life until emergency units can arrive to provide proper care. CPR training resources can be found via the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association; both online and in person.

How Your Support Helps
